{"id":14152,"date":"2016-03-04T16:00:50","date_gmt":"2016-03-05T00:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/openness.microsoft.com\/blog\/?p=14152"},"modified":"2025-01-15T16:27:56","modified_gmt":"2025-01-16T00:27:56","slug":"airports-open-source-microsoft-azure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opensource.microsoft.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/04\/airports-open-source-microsoft-azure\/","title":{"rendered":"Improving airports using open source tools on Microsoft Azure"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of the great understudied bottlenecks at airports is the time aircraft spend taxiing to and from the runway.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.stir.ac.uk\/~sbr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sandy Brownlee, PhD<\/a>, a senior research assistant at the University of Stirling in Scotland, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.nott.ac.uk\/~pszja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason Atkin<\/a>, assistant professor at the University of Nottingham, turned their computer science expertise toward this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloud computing is empowering the research team to analyze airport bottlenecks and create a model that will one day recommend better paths for every plane. They used <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Azure<\/a> to store data on thousands of taxiways at different airports and create open tools, now available to anyone on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/gm-tools\/gm-tools\/wiki\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GitHub<\/a>, to model and improve aircraft taxiing to reduce pollution and improve efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modeling required Brownlee to bring together data for dozens of airports from publicly available sources, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flightradar24.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flight Radar 24<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Street Map<\/a>. He was pleasantly surprised to find how easy it was to use <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/overview\/open-source\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open-source tools on Microsoft Azure<\/a>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/documentation\/articles\/virtual-machines-linux-opensource\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linux virtual machines<\/a>, and developing his methods using <a href=\"http:\/\/openjdk.java.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenJDK<\/a>.\u00a0Processing speeds using Azure enabled him to complete his work in one-tenth the time of just using his desktop computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about how scientists in the United Kingdom are working hard to improve airport operations, to reduce costs and impact on the environment, check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.msdn.microsoft.com\/msr_er\/2016\/02\/24\/buckled-up-and-ready-to-go-untangling-airports-using-open-source-tools-on-microsoft-azure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Research blog <\/a>and the below video.
