The rise of open source has had significant impact across the technology landscape\u2014transforming software development, accelerating innovation, and driving digital transformation. In fact, 95% of organizations have either increased or maintained their use of open source software in the past year,1<\/sup> and 96% of applications now leverage open source.2<\/sup> Open source<\/a> is fundamental to Microsoft and can be found throughout the company today\u2014across Microsoft, developers are using open source technology and building it with the collaborators across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n

We are committed to building open solutions and enabling customers, partners, and project communities to do the same. Microsoft open source contributions span multiple areas from operating systems (for example Linux) to programming languages (such as Node.js, Python, and PHP), and from data and AI (like PostgreSQL, TensorFlow, and ONNX) to web technologies (such as Webpack and Svelte). We have also open sourced many of our flagship offerings including .NET, VS Code, and TypeScript.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ve invested in making Azure a proven platform for running Linux and open source workloads<\/a>. Linux is widely adopted in Azure as more than 60% of customer cores in Azure run Linux-based workloads. With Azure, you have the flexibility to build, secure, and scale intelligent applications using the open source software of your choice. Microsoft supports all major Linux distributions and has close collaboration with Red Hat, SUSE, Canonical, and the broader Linux community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, open source is core to our product strategy and a foundational part of our culture. Today, Microsoft has over 60,000 employees using GitHub and we manage over 14,000 public repositories covering everything from best practices and our entire documentation systems to innovative projects like PowerTools and PowerShell. The Microsoft Open Source Programs Office (OSPO) ensures that we consume open source properly, provide secure solutions to our customers, and participate authentically in open source communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
